Over the weekend IGN broke some amazing news. Capcom has officially confirmed that more Resident Evil Remakes are in the works. This is something fans expected, seeing the success of the Resident Evil 2,3, and 4 remakes, this was almost a given. In previous years leading up to the release of the poorly received Resident Evil 6 back in October of 2012, Capcom would release spin-off entries that would help tie off loose ends from the main line games. While not every game was a smashing success, this strategy led to iconic games such as Resident Evil Code: Veronica, Revelations, The Darkside Chronicles, and others. These games served their purpose and provided an abundance of lore and rich story details that continued and even transformed many character arcs over the years. While I do miss this way of releasing games, looking at the sales chart, I am not sure we will be returning to this method anytime soon.
Per Statista, Resident Evil 7 AKA Biohazard, remains the best-selling RE title at 13.6 million copies sold, number 2? The Resident Evil 2 2019 remake at 13.1 million copies sold. The remake was amazing, it took one of the best RE games in the franchise, modernized it and made it better in every way. 2020’s RE3 remake sits at 6th under RE5, 6, and 8 (Village) with 8 million copies sold. Last but certainly not least, this year’s RE4 remake is 7th just under RE3 at 4.96 million copies sold. Totaling out at just over 26 million copies sold between the 3 remakes, we knew that more were coming, and now we have confirmation. Capcom did not give any specifics on when the next remake would be out or which game they plan to do next. Many fans have been clamoring for a Code Veronica remake for years. RE5 makes sense as well seeing how canonically it would be the next game in the story’s plot, with Revelations sandwiched between 4 and 5. For those who are not up to date on the order in which to play the Resident Evil games, I have you covered right here:
RE5 was another main line game that was not well received at the time. As a solo experience, the game does not feel much like RE, and can get tiresome. However, as a co-op experience, the game is a blast with a friend. If they were to remake RE5, I think it would be a massive hit today, while also making some story and level design tweaks as they did with RE4. Code Veronica is more niche, hardcore fans would love it and I personally would love for new players to experience it as well. If you have played this game and remember it well, then you know a large majority of the plot did not age well. I am not sure how much of the OG gameplay can be kept intact, this may leave it feeling entirely different than we remember. This is part of the reason that the RE3 remake tanked review wise, too much cut content, although the reason for the cuts would be different with a Code Veronica remake. Regardless of what is next, another remake or possibly RE9, Capcom is assuredly going to knock it out of the park and RE fans should be pumped for whatever comes next.
